MANDATED SCREENINGS

In accordance with California Education Code 49455 and California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 2952 (c)(1), student vision and hearing screening will be provided to school entry TK/K, 2, 5, 8, and 10th grades and to all students enrolled in special education as required for their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Color vision screening will also be conducted for 1st grade males. You will be notified if your child is in need of further testing via referral from the school nurse. Vision and/or hearing screening may be provided to any student who:
  • Exhibit signs and symptoms of eye or vision and/or hearing problems.
  • Screening may also be conducted upon parent and/or teacher request of the school nurse.
Please consider that health screenings are designated to enable early detection of possible problems that may affect your child’s learning abilities. Parents/guardians may opt their child out of screening(s) by submitting their request in writing to the school annually indicating the child’s name, grade, teacher, and screening(s) that they wish their child to be exempted from. Parents have the right to have their child’s vision and hearing tested outside of the school (at the parent’s expense), California Education Code 49455, to meet the State law requirement.

If you receive a vision referral from a screening and there are barriers to obtaining an exam and lenses, talk to your child's school nurse or an administrator for assistance. VSP Find a Doctor Link

MEDICATIONS IN SCHOOL

For students who have a chronic health condition that requires them to take medication during the regular school day with or without assistance, please obtain physician written authorization and parent/guardian consent. This applies for all prescription and over-the-counter treatment options (i.e. Neosporin, aspirin, albuterol, epinephrine, etc.). Treatment must be as prescribed by a CA licensed MD/DO. The correct authorizations along with the medication must be presented by an adult to the school nurse and/or academy site technician annually. (California Education Code #33308.5, 49400 and 49423) See California Department of Education Program Advisory on Medication Administration, May, 2005 for full details. Our school forms can be uploaded from the buttons below.
